Antifreeze

Topics:

  • Antifreeze

Antifreeze:
Antifreeze is used in a car’s coolant. It is a special additive that is added to the coolant and ensures that the fluid does not freeze at a temperature of 0 degrees Celsius.
In the workshop there are also gauges available that can be used to check whether the antifreeze level in the coolant is still adequate. Since this decreases over the years, it is advisable, if the test result is negative, to replace the entire contents of the cooling system. When fluid without antifreeze (such as tap water) is used in the cooling system, there is a risk that when the water freezes and expands at 0 degrees (which can easily happen in winter), the engine block may crack. New coolant is resistant to temperatures from -20 to -25 degrees Celsius (sometimes even lower).

Pure antifreeze is called “ethylene glycol, also known as ethane-1,2-diol”. It is extremely harmful to health if ingested. For adults, an amount of approximately 100 ml can already have fatal consequences.
