Nowadays, multiple underbody shields are mounted under every car. These serve several purposes:
- Protection of the bodywork and various components against dirt, corrosion and splashing water.
- Aerodynamics (air flows more easily underneath the car).
- Protection against animals that could otherwise easily crawl into the engine bay (think of cats seeking warmth, martens, etc.)
