The MegaSquirt BMW project:
Due to my special interest in the software and hardware of the MegaSquirt ECU and all related components, I decided in October 2018 to prepare another engine. The following goals were set:
- The engine will be mounted on a frame; so it will not be installed in a vehicle or sold.
- The engine will be used for educational purposes, so that it can be used in regular lessons and courses. After completion of the project, interested parties can register for a course in which everything related to the programmable engine management system for the BMW engine will be covered. Naturally with a live demonstration with a running engine. Interested? Then keep an eye on this page or contact me via the guestbook or contact form.
- Converting from classic techniques to a computer-controlled system takes an enormous amount of time. It is therefore more practical in this project to replace an existing engine management system and make use of the sensors and actuators that are already present;
- The engine from a BMW 535i e34 that we already owned has been found suitable for conversion. This engine is in mint condition and has been stationary for several years. Given the condition of the engine, an overhaul is not necessary, but a thorough inspection and maintenance certainly is.
- A dashboard with a fixed desktop computer with one or more screens will be mounted on the engine frame. TunerStudio will be installed on this PC. One of the screens will be used for the gauges and the other to display and/or adjust the maps.
- All work will be described on this website; with each update the current page will be expanded.
Note! The project is still in progress. At this moment (April 2019) the engine has been successfully started for the first time. Now it is getting even more interesting; from this point on, the tuning will begin. The pages shown below will therefore still be updated!
